Ulam–Warburton Automaton
This mission is dedicated to the Ulam–Warburton cellular automaton (UWCA) - a 2-dimensional fractal pattern that grows on a regular grid of cells consisting of squares.
Starting with one square initially ON and all others OFF, successive iterations are generated by turning ON all squares that share precisely one edge with an ON square.
This pattern is shown among others (so I recommend you to watch it all) in the following video with Neil Sloane (founder of the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences) starting from the 8.10.
The playground of this and other patterns may be seen on the page. It will be easier to solve the task and it's just a beautiful hypnotic view!)
So, your function must return the number of activated cells after given number of steps.
Input: Number of steps as integer.
Output: Number of cells as integer.
Examples:
assert automaton(1) == 1 assert automaton(2) == 5 assert automaton(3) == 9 assert automaton(4) == 21
CheckiO Extensions allow you to use local files to solve missions. More info in a blog post.
In order to install CheckiO client you'll need installed Python (version at least 3.8)
Install CheckiO Client first:
pip3 install checkio_client
Configure your tool
checkio --domain=py config --key=
Sync solutions into your local folder
checkio sync
(in beta testing) Launch local server so your browser can use it and sync solution between local file end extension on the fly. (doesn't work for safari)
checkio serv -d
Alternatevly, you can install Chrome extension or FF addon
checkio install-plugin
checkio install-plugin --ff
checkio install-plugin --chromium
Read more here about other functionality that the checkio client provides. Feel free to submit an issue in case of any difficulties.
