Yes. And `for` is another quick way to make a loop: you can do everything with `while`. And `with` is another quick way to make an exception handler: you can do everything with `except` and `finally`. And `assert` is another quick way to conditionally raise an exception: you can do everything with `if` and `raise`. And `is` is another quick way to ascertain the identity of an object: you can do everything with `id` and `==`. And `in` is another quick way to check a collection for an object: you can do everything with `any` and `==`. And `yield` is another quick way to make an iterator: you can do everything with `class`, `iter` and `next`. And `del` is another quick way to remove a name from a scope: you can do everything using `vars().pop`. While we're at it, `=` is another quick way to assign a name: you can do everything using `vars().update`. :-D And so on. Does this mean all of these constructs are redundant? And if they are, there is no "redundant here". They are redundant everywhere they are used. I think a much more sensible way of speaking would be to say that a general construct is redundant if a more specialized construct can be used. So, if anything, `def` is redundant here. :-]
