I thought that I should leave a bit of clarification even though it seems to be obvious for those who was reading python docs ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ . There's a slight difference actually between explicitly setting separator character to single space and setting it to `None` (same as calling `split` with no arguments). In the latter case it will split on any symbol for which `isspace` is `True`: <blockquote> A character is whitespace if in the Unicode character database ... either its general category is Zs (“Separator, space”), or its bidirectional class is one of WS, B, or S. </blockquote> For example: ```python <blockquote> <blockquote> <blockquote> 'a\xa0b'.split() # \xa0 is non-breaking space ['a', 'b'] 'a\xa0b'.split(' ') ['a\xa0b'] ``` </blockquote> </blockquote> </blockquote> Another difference is that in the former case `split` treats consecutive separators like if they were joining empty strings (same goes for trailing/leading delimiters). While in the latter case consecutive whitespace chars are grouped together and trailing/leading are ignored. ```python <blockquote> <blockquote> <blockquote> ' a b c'.split(' ') ['', 'a', 'b', '', 'c'] ' a b c'.split() ['a', 'b', 'c'] ``` </blockquote> </blockquote> </blockquote>
