Is it really needed to process phrase by words, what if add 'space' to the group pattern in ferst re.sub usage? Looks like it works oneline merge of your code: <pre class='brush: python'>def translate(phrase): return re.sub('([aeiouy]){3}', r'\1', re.sub(r'([^aeiouy\s])[aeiouy]', r'\1', phrase)) </pre>

yeah, one of the improvement. this trick with \s did not occur to me
