Very clear solution. I got almost same code, but use isalpha instead of replace. List comprehension in my solution is excess.

Nice! Very similar to what I did. Is there an advantage to using a.lower().replace() instead of a.replace().lower()?

After replace() string will be shorter, so lower() will run faster. On the other hand lower() will not affect repace() as string remains of same length. So it should be a little faster if you first replace() and then lower(). Difference shouldn't be really big, because lower() should be O(N) if I understand right. But comparing to sorting the string, which can't be less than is O(N logN), it is nothing.
