I suspected there was a more concise way to create the 3 opposite faces of a cube, but could't think of how to do it. How can the combine lambda be fit into the one-liner? Won't that make it 2 lines?

So, I tried <pre class='brush: python'>[ ''.join(sorted(c[i] + c[j])) for i,j in ((0, 3), (1, 2), (4, 5)) for c in cubes] </pre> and it didn't work. Then I tried <pre class='brush: python'>[( ''.join(sorted(c[i] + c[j])) for i,j in ((0, 3), (1, 2), (4, 5)) ) for c in cubes] </pre> to create the 3 opposites ( called faces) fore each cube. It still didn't work. Finally, <pre class='brush: python'>[[ ''.join(sorted(c[i] + c[j])) for i,j in ((0, 3), (1, 2), (4, 5)) ] for c in cubes] </pre> did work. I have no clue why a generator doesn't work while a list works for faces. The only use for faces is the first parameter of combinations.

While it might be a smart solution, does it really belong in the "clear and readable" category?

You've got a point there. It was clear to me after much deliberation on the problem, but it lacks leading the reader down the thinking process. It probably fits better in the Creative section.
