Thanks for the reminder on `iter(something)` - it is something I should start using more often! Regarding `compile`: I usually don't use it for the small cases like this one. Here I wanted to create just a simple/elegant solution :)

Wow! This is something that didn't even cross my mind as a possible thing to do. This changes everything, thanks! :) Btw, if you don't mind me being direct - why no love/votes for the solution? ;)

I agree on leaving small cases to the re pattern cache, but in this case it would be way more efficient to create the pattern outside the function. All of the string manipulation in join() and nested iteration re-compute the exact same result on every call. I know this isn't speedy category, but just moving matchers to top level actually improves readability in my opinion, and isn't any longer. Using precomputed values where possible is a pet peeve of mine. As a related side note it would also be possible to join the 3 individual matchers to one re using |, like <a href="https://py.checkio.org/mission/stressful-subject/publications/juestr/python-3/generated-red-re/">here</a>.

Hi all! Can somebody explain how works pattern '+[.!-]*' in regex? Especially, why '+' has no any char before itself. Regards, s_m

bcs of this part where .join adds '+[.!-]*' between every letter in iterated word <pre class='brush: python'> matchers = [ re.compile('+[.!-]*'.join(word), re.I) for word in ['help', 'asap', 'urgent'] </pre> it gives you this regex 'h+[.!-]e+[.!-]l+[.!-]*p' and than plus sign goes to letter before

Good solution, however, I would replace this pattern '+[.!-]*' with more broadly covered string.punctuation of string module constant. I know there was no such requirement to cover all possible punctuation sings, but I feel much better this way) <pre class='brush: python'>import re import string def is_stressful(subj): return (subj.isupper() or subj.endswith('!!!') or any(re.search('+[{}]*'.format(string.punctuation).join(c for c in word), subj.lower()) for word in ['help', 'asap', 'urgent'])) </pre>

This solution was posted a year and a half ago and at that time it passed all the tests. I guess the test you mention was added (much) later.

It's ridiculous how many times something like regex could have cut down my code or solved my problem for me. I know this is going on 2 years old, but just wanted to toss in that I love how beautiful this code is compared to my spaghetti.

I'm not a fan of this regex. Mission Precondition doesn't say that the only possible symbols are `.!-`, so your solution is tailored to the (lack of) tests and would need to be maintained again and again.

I understand the regex part. How can the variable word be used this way, before the usage in the for loop where it gets defines? Where can I study this topic in further detail. I think it has to do with Python rules or does it have to do with the any() function.
