This is really clever code. I like how you call checkio to build your string and remove the white spaces with the strip() method. I had trouble with the white spaces and had to add extra if statements. It is a good way to build a dictionary with the enumerate function. It was a good idea to check if the number is in d, much better than my method which was to truncate the digits and deal with the unique numbers separately. This code is very helpful, thanks for publishing it.

dict(enumerate(l)) : hey, that's cool! btw, noming objects "l" is ambiguous, it can look like "1" and be confusing

There are many cool things in my solutions here. Be sure to check them out. ;-) Regarding ell: I don't buy that anymore. We've gone a long way from teletype monocolor terminals and 3x5 fonts. And traditional propagation of myths is what's holding CS back from attaining its full potential. Sincerely: look at the code above. There are both ell and one there. Do they look the same to you? (Pay attention to syntax coloring, too.) Because if they do, may I suggest visiting the ophthalmologist... BTW Why no-one says that g and q look similar? And the confusion potential is much greater: they are both .islower(). I'll tell you why: only because they didn't look so similar on the terminals from 1970s. :-P

Your solution is, of course very great! - however, I am wondering if it is ok to change the given info? I mean, of course it is --- but should it be ok? Just curious. I have always been going on that we had to use the was the given info was given. But at any rate, your solution (as usual!) is great! Thank you.

There's no "info", besides hints in the form of "reset source". There is just specification what the name given should do when called. It even doesn't have to be a def: it can be a lambda, a bound method, a builtin, an instance with __call__ attribute, or even a class. :-D

Lol, I also had the idea to use a dictionary and enumeration. But somehow it didn't cross my mind to just use enumerate directly, so I put it in a dict comprehension. Silly me. ;) Oh, the use of recursion is nice too. At one point I thought about it and then dismissed it after failing to find the right approach. Thanks for this example. Maybe I can improve my solution with the help of it.

My solutions are often deceivingly simple-looking. Don't be discouraged, learn little by little and your style will improve much. Regarding dict of enumerate: Python is fantastically modular. Almost anything can be plugged into almost anything else. BTW can you guess what <pre class='brush: python'>dict("() [] {}".split()) </pre> does? :-)

Now, that's tricky. My guess would be that dict() makes that into: <pre class='brush: python'>{0: (), 1: [], 2: {}} </pre> It enumerates the elments of the iterable we gave it and puts them in a new dictionary. I could look it up, but you said 'guess'. ;) But I think I might have read something like that when I browsed help() in my interpreter. So am I right, or at least close?

If enumerate was implicit, first it would violate the Zen, and second (more important:), I wouldn't need to write "enumerate" in line 3 of my solution. That's impossible, since I did write it. :-D Second, this isn't Tcl. Python is strongly typed, not stringly typed. ;-) eval is never implicit. And split splits strs. You can look now, or you can continue guessing. Your choice. :-)

Too late, I have looked. ;) I think I never would have guessed that, but I see how it works now. I also see that even the splitting part I got wrong. Of course it splits a string into a list of strings. At least that part I should have got right. :/

Recursion is an obvious choice. But this solution is awesome anyway!

For me, recursion is not really obvious. You're always adding something to the result, and "calling yourself" with a smaller number. In my book, that's just ordinary sequential execution. Only the functional libertarians naturally see the recursion there. :-)
