re is the Regular Expressions module of Python. here it is used to replace (using the sub-function of re) everything else but Uppercase by Nothing: [a-z] means all lowercase letters, [\d] are digits, [\w] are letters and [^\w] is everything BUT letters. see <a href="https://docs.python.org/2/howto/regex.html">https://docs.python.org/2/howto/regex.html</a>

It's not easy to understand to the people with no regex background knowledge and this task could be solved with more readable standard functionality without importing any libraries, this should be posted in 'Creative' section instead.
