What does "* 2" do? And why without it code doesn't work? ;-)

"* 2" duplicates the balls list, thus making sure there is always at least 2 elements, never 1. Because itemgetter returns a tuple of items if there is more than one argument, but only the item itself if there is only one. Thanks for pointing this out !

I would say it's a weird decision, maybe too much zeal and overthinking :) I can understand why they did it, most of the time you will know how many items you want to get. But it's kind of a "trap feature", isn't it ?

In fact it's history... in the beginning, it supported only one index. Later, when people realized that sorting (what it was most often used for) was often done by more than one key, and tuples are ordered lexicographically, they just added that feature. One-index non-tuple return type just stayed for backward compatibility, I guess - though Guido is often opposed to return types depending on function arguments, he's more opposed to breaking backwards compatibility. :-)
