I don't think it ever was documented. `formatter` was just a helping module for `pydoc`, a long time ago when Earth and Python stdlib were both flat. :-D When `pydoc` was modernized, it incorporated many functions, and delegated the raw formatting to `textwrap`. `format_roman` was there, along with many other exoting formatting capabilities, because at that early age, Guido was young and idealistic, and believed in beautiful documentation - full Python even had a dependency on TeX distribution for generating docs. :-D In the meantime, HTML for docs and fixed width fonts for code have won, and such discussions seem incredibly archaic. :-)

A pleasant explanation that made my day! I'm not so surprised about TeX, but it sure seems to come from dark ages :-P For now, I wonder if I can dig a little in Python docs to make such "exotic" discovery by myself... What a game!

i tried and i got <pre class='brush: python'>TypeError: unbound method format_roman() must be called with AbstractFormatter instance as first argument (got NoneType instance instead) </pre> Any idea what am i doing wrong?

Yes. You're using the wrong Python. :-P It's wrong ontologically, but more importantly, it is wrong for running this code. Try Python 3.

This is Python 3, I think. You might be using version 2.

Hah. I thought, "I bet this is in the standard library," spent 5 mins looking for it in the docs and then gave up and implemented a <a href="https://py.checkio.org/mission/roman-numerals/publications/sedm0784/python-3/minimal-roman-strings/">boring match case lookup</a>. (－‸ლ)

Yeah, we lost formatter, but we gained match/case. Much more boring if you ask me. :-]

Nice treasure from the deprecated stdlib. Only looking at docs, I could not find this gem. Curious, I looked the source code (with "inspect.getsource") and saw a comment "This will die of IndexError when counter is too big". So after some calls, I found out that it fails for 4000 (and bigger numbers). Sadly, it has been removed in python 3.10.

Well, I always thought Roman numerals were sensibly defined up to 3999 anyway. (Precondition agrees.) Everything else in your comment is answered by the title, I guess. :]
