well done!!! but you say : if items:... so what happens if there is no items ? I think (perhaps am i wrong) that replace_last return None Is that what you want?

It simply won't yield anything which translates to empty list

Great, easy to understand! I wonder however if (and how?) one could use a "yield from" expression instead of an explicit loop for the last two lines...
