I don't get it, why not just 'int(s,r) or 0' ?

Because if the number is not valid for this radix, say you have int("1A", 8), the call to "int" will cause an exception which cannot be caught with the "or" operator. You either need a "try-catch", or you need to make sure that the radix will be large enough.

It was a good idea to check the invalidity only for the max(s),I use a for statement instead for all digits

`(r > int(max(s),36)) - 1` This is really cool. I didn't come up with this but a ugly solution with `string.printable.index()`. And using short-circuit evaluation here is also brilliant.
