    digits = 0
    while a:
        digits += 1
        a //= 10
    return digits + (not digits) # 0 has 1 digit

if a = 0 then digits = 0 but we need it to be 1. (not digits) = 1 when digits = 0. so we basically just add 1 to digits when digits = 0. also we can write: return digits or 1
