First: Well, yes, people do remove their solutions. CiO IMO shouldn't remove the discussions under them, but you can only complain to the admins about that. Second: yes, you should solve the mission. It's really not hard. :-) It surely is easier than for me to summarize a dozen-posts-discussion in a single post here. :-]

the try/except block lets you go ahead after an error. if it sees an error, it jumps to the except block to run the rest of the code. in this case, you see the code tries to return an array. if it is't an array, it will be an error and got straight to the except block, thus completing the code

You don't just see "official" solution, you see a myriad of ways to solve a task. :-) BTW read about EAFP (comment <a href="http://www.checkio.org/mission/index-power/publications/veky/python-3/indexcept/#comment-17806">above</a>), so you know the advantages of such an approach.

You can think whatever you want, but I think you're subtly wrong. Does one Geoffrey Hill, for example, "not give a damn" about Chicago Manual of Style? No, of course not. He knows it very well, and realizes its applicability when it's applicable. He also knows when it's not applicable, and doesn't let it hold him down.

I've just landed both at programming and at checkIo, but my feelings toward this solution are: a coder must be both creative and correct when working on the problems given. CheckIo problems always feature solutions which are "by the book" and downright crazy and inventive. I believe a learner such as I has to gain from both. I don't see any gain from reading twenty conventional solutions, so I welcome the occasional unconventional. FizzBuzz features a one line solution that doesn't even makes use of the instruments the problem asked for (if statements, etc), but I learned by reading it anyway.

Argh. It seems that part of forum is closed for the outsiders. :-/ Anyway... while discussing some new mission, I mentioned <a href="http://www.checkio.org/mission/index-power/publications/veky/python-3/indexcept/share/5819e3f4f4329ec2a134522b1275a16a/#comment-17806">EAFP</a>. Bryukh googled, felt lucky, and got the site of European Association of Fish Pathologists. After that, EAFP never quite meant the same to us. :-D We tried to judge whether Google got confused or did that on purpose, and Bryukh's theory is that it knows about his goldfish that died when he was a child, and he never really got over it. :-]

Actually array[-1] for non empty array does not rise IndexError exception (I've just tried, it doesn't :D ) so this solution fails on array = [2] and n = -1 (0.5 vs correct -1). Check me if I wrong.

You're wrong on two levels, which is interesting. :-D First, noone says anything about Nth element of array. Task speaks about "element with index N". I'm sure you agree that element with index -1 of [2] really is 2. If not, learn about negative indexing of a list. Second, there is a precondition in the task text. I suppose you know what a precondition is. ;-)

Concision's been the problem: I could always finish the assignments but they could've always been shorter and more elegant you know? At university--I took it on a whim and ended up liking it more than I expected. They're actually throwing us into coding C right now (when I feel like I've just touched python T_T) and can I say we're spoiled by how easy it is to read python?

Well, there are two issues here. Both are interesting in some way. :-) First, Python promotes clear responsibility separation. The one who designs requirements should set (implicitly or explicitly) preconditions under which the required solution makes sense. Statically typed languages usually do some of that work for you through type checking, but it's usually a disservice since people then think it's all they have to think about, and it usually isn't. [Moreover, value-semantical languages usually do a half-assed job of it, so the fact that "sum of two ints is an int" typechecks doesn't mean that sum of 2 billion and 2 billion is 4 billion. :-P But that's a different story.:] Here, the task clearly says what inputs are, and what preconditions they satisfy. If they don't, it's not the responsibility of the function to work correctly. Not because we're lazy, but because it wasn't defined what it means to "work correctly" in that case. You're then correct to wonder: what are the responsibilities of functions under such circumstances? Zen of Python says: Errors should never pass silently (unless explicitly silenced). It's an incredibly strong statement. Python, in the name of practicality, doesn't always enforce it, but overall it does a very nice job of it. Here it means: if the function has any doubts about whether it is used in a specified way, it should raise an exception. It should not swipe it under the carpet. It should not return -1, or None, or some random value, or set some attribute of some object that the caller "should" check but of course noone does that all the time. It should disrupt its caller, and say "hey, I'm not qualified to handle this. Are you sure you wanted this?" Here, noone said anything about calling the function with a string and a float, for example. It would be very wrong (in the sense of Python philosophy, mind you---in some other languages it might be exactly the right thing to do) to return -1 in that case. Much better is to raise, and to tell a caller: "hm, if that's really what you wanted, I can't help you".

How do you define "mess"? You probably mean collapsing newlines, but I'd argue that in a 3-line program, it doesn't harm readability. More precisely: the main reason PEP8 argues for avoiding the collapse in multipart blocks is that it's hard to visualize the logic with respect to the rest of the code. In this case, there is no "rest of the code" (other than "def", which is outdented anyway).

Yes. It's often a good idea to stick to the spec. In this case, it says <blockquote> If N is outside of the array (not: if N is not less than length of array, or similar) </blockquote> and that is precisely what IndexError means. N can be "outside of the array" in many complicated ways, except will take care of them unambiguously.

Your biggest problem is not knowing the difference between keywords and callables. Callables ("functions", but classes and other objects too), like `len` or `index_power` require parentheses for their arguments. Keywords, like `if` or `return`, don't.

Shortly, keywords are used (mostly) for control flow. Those are reserved words, and you can't reuse those for your names. Callables are used (mostly) for calling. You can (re)name them as you please. <pre class='brush: python'>len = 5 # fine with Python, though probably not good style def = 8 # SyntaxError </pre> Most IDEs color them differently. E.g. IDLE's default theme colors keywords orange, and builtin callables purple.

Is there any difference between for and while loops? Yes, if all you're doing in the while loop is nexting some iterator until it raises StopIteration, then you should use for instead, because it communicates your intent better, and it doesn't force the reader to think about irrelevant details. Same: if you're "handling" the exception with just a pass block, then you aren't really handling it, you're suppressing it, and you should say so.
