 About one and half months ago, in January 2015, I was looking for a "second" 
 programming language to learn that would give me a chance to search good 
 projects on a frilance board. My office (outrageous lie, I have no office)
 would be closed, but I had a home computer (it is my actual office), 
 a cap with ear-flaps, vodka, balalaika, and a tame bear, Bobik. I decided 
 to forget anything I know about PHP and use only the new scripting language 
 I had been thinking about lately: a descendant of ABC that would appeal 
 to Unix/C hackers (I'm not a hacker, of course, I even ask my grandmother 
 to power on my computer, it is very complicated task for me). I choose 
 Python as a search phrase for Google, being in a slightly irreverent mood 
 (as always, after one bottle of vodka).
 
 Today, I can safely say that Python has changed my life. I have moved my computer
 to a different room. I spend my working days meeting the challenges here on 
 CheckIO, when I'm not persuade my grandmother to power on the computer or spamming
 veky's solutions to attract any attention. There are Python labels on the cap 
 with ear-flaps, on the empty bottle of vodka, on the balalaika, and now on 
 the Bobik's back. Frankly, my only unfulfilled wish is to have at least one 
 contract invitation which is belongs to Python (also, Dear Santa, I want to earn 
 at least $500,000 per year without doing anything but Python programming, brand 
 new balalaika, drums, Mac Pro, and I want move myself and my grandmother (she 
 will help me to power on my brand new Mac Pro) to Thailand).
 
 Out of kidding, I'd like to say thank you Guido for this awesome language 
 he created. Another praise is to CheckIO team, which are created such a lovely
 place for learning Python. Another one is to all CheckIO members who are 
 speeding up my brain with their solutions.

Umm... As I remember, it was <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vilnius_BASIC">BASIC-86</a>. I know a bit of Perl, of course, it was my first scripting language, yes. But I didn't learn it a much, as well as I didn't do any obfuscation experiments with Perl. Actually, right now, my primary language is PHP, at least for about last 9-10 years. I hope that the Python will be my primary language, because I have a lot more fun with it than with PHP. :)

I meant, what was "second" in line 4 referring to. Ah. It was not the "first/second" thing. It was the "primary/second" thing. For example, my primary language is Russian, and my second language is English (did you see the phrase, "English as a second language"? It's about myself). The Russian is my primary language because I know it and use it for long time, longer, for example, than I use English, or French, or Latin. If I will use English more than Russian, and will know it better than Russian, the English will be my primary, and the Russian will be my second[ary]. So, I apply the same approach for programming languages — my primary language is PHP, because I use it longer than my other langs, and I know it better than my other langs. And when I write "second" (especially in quotes) I mean that somewhere the "primary", not the "first", exists. :) About your comment about PHP... I just use PHP, I hate it sometimes, I like it sometimes. I use other languages sometimes. Any language is just a tool. Of course, some tools are giving me more joy than other tools. But I use a tool, not a tool uses me. I create jungles or metropolis. My tools are not so meaningful things to create jungles or metropolis around me without my will. If I look around I see things and people who makes my life like a jungles or like a comfortable studio, and who don't. Programming languages are not among such things. That's why I can't understand when somebody is too emotional about programming languages; I just not so emotional when talking about such things. I don't share your opinion but I respect it and I will fight for your ability to sound it (I forgot where I've heard this phrase, but it applies very good for the situation). But only until you will start to disgrace somebody because of their tools. But I agree with you that Python has awesome design, a much much much much better than PHP has. With Python I feel that I could explain my thoughts better than I can do with PHP.

I think you should read the whole discussion. Last post contains the resolution of "jungle problem" - precisely people who view programming languages as "just a tool" do use PHP, because PHP is designed (evolved:) to cater to these people's needs. It is a valid world-view, that I don't share. I don't intentionally disgrace people who live in jungles, but I don't truly, deeply understand them on a "fellow human" level, and it shows. :-/ And sorry, but PHP really is a jungle, that's almost an objective fact. Did you read the link about name lengths? That doesn't invalidate your argument about building your environment. You can build a villa in a jungle and live inside it, it's just a lot harder than when you have the infrastructure at hand.

"PHP really is a jungle" is a mention of the tool. Why not, it is a good opinion, I respect it. "I don’t intentionally disgrace people who live in jungles" is a disgrace already. You are talking that somebody is living in jungles because they just use another tools. "People who live in jungles" is a disgrace. You could write that you are not understand people who use such a bad tools. You could write that they are not effective because of using such tools or something like this. But instead you write that they are living in jungles trying to suggest that they are not civilized people which is a disgrace, because at the same time you suggest that you are civilized. It is why I was shrugging my shoulders. I do not understand your logic, because it is based on a system error, rotten roots. If I will assume that PI == 7, I could write a lot of things which will be true when PI is 7. Those things will have iron logic, but they will be based on a fundamental error. In your words, the system error is not that Python is better than PHP or vise versa, the system error is when you think that this can be used for disgrace a person. I already have read the whole topic you have linked. All I see there is a try to show that you are more civilized man than others. There are a lot of useful things, but they are based on your feeling of your highness among others, on your will to be self-affirmated, on your will to be a winner in every discussion; they are not based on a sympathy to the people, on a willing to help. Such things could make you king of beasts in jungles, not a civilized human.

It's not about smartness. I know very well there might be an objective reason why someone might be forced to write in PHP. But if they like it, then they are probably smarter than me (unless they are masochistic:), and I would really like to know their views on the language design. Because to me, it really looks like a dense jungle.

I really can't see why that bothers you so much. Ok, I'm a monkey swinging from a tree, if you want. Insert another lifeform if it suits you. It doesn't bother me at all. But I'm a monkey that knows Python very well, and a monkey who can teach you something about it. You can value that, or not, depending on whether the fear of monkeys is stronger than your desire to learn something. In the end, you will either learn valuable information, or you'll be a victim of your prejudice that monkeys can't teach you anything valuable. The choice is yours. For someone who is so upset by my "reinterpretation" of your words, you sure do put a lot of reinterpretation in mine. :-) I never said these people are necessarily uncivilized, I said they have a much more difficult access to civilization, and that's not the same. If you're just for a moment willing to ignore the fact that a piece of garbage is relying that information to you, you can learn. Of course you can learn in many other ways. They might be more or less successful. But I'm teaching people for a long time, and don't think I haven't learned a few tricks about what sticks. <hr /> And now let's try to talk about PHP. It should be more interesting. Why? Because here I don't know much. To me, a monkey swinging from a tree, a decision to name your builtin functions based on how their length will map onto the fixed number of hash buckets, is a horrible mix of ignorance of hashing process, laziness and total disregard for end users who will have to learn these names, and unfortunate fact of using an implementation language where strlen is provided as a function, but sum (not to mention md5:) is not. To you, a civilized man with a wide perspective, it must seem like a valid tradeoff. Between what? Consistency of your language and sanity of your users on one hand. What is on the other? Please tell me. I honestly don't know, and my small brain cannot think of anything to put there.

Ok. I will not troll you if you will not act like an alpha-monkey. :) About PHP. I saw so much holy wars "PHP versus Something" for the last 9-10 years that any PHP criticizing is boring me to death. I already know that it's not the best tool. So what the purpose to show me another portion of criticism? Do you think I will learn something new from this? No. Do you think it will suddenly open my eyes and I will stop using PHP? My eyes are open at least last 7 years (first few years I was a fanat of PHP). As I said, it's just a tool. At this moment the tool is giving me more advantages than disadvantages, so I use it. I can stop to use PHP right now if you will pay me money while I'm learning Python ($3,000 per month will help me to survive). And if you will find me a job after I will know Python at a decent level. If no, let's will not talk about disadvantages of PHP, because PHP it's the only way I can earn money for life. Or, at least, PHP is a tool which gives me more money than other tools I'm able to use right now. I just can gain nothing useful from reading another one PHP criticism, And since the criticism is not affecting me emotionally (as it could affect a lot of PHP guys who is shiting bricks when they see any PHP critique), I can't understand what you was trying to achieve by asking me read the whole thread you have linked. The only things I can see and learn from the thread is how you are treating opponents. :)

Ok, that explains a lot of stuff. As I said in some other place, I understand if someone must live in a jungle because of objective reasons (example: money). But that doesn't change the fact that the man lives in a freaking jungle. We can be sorry for him instead of discussing with him, but we cannot ignore that fact. :-/ Now I understand why you got so emotional over it, in spite of saying it doesn't affect you (really, it's obvious that it does). And I'm sorry I pulled a few of wrong strings in your case. But really, I don't think you're completely honest in that last sentence. I must say that. Though, your words, your life. And "opponent" is a bad word for that. As I said, I never view CiO discussions as just one-on-one, and there are no sides, except temporarily in the context of a discussion. <hr /> In fact I might be able to get you a job, but not for $3000/month (I get about a third of that amount for my pay). But if by "advantages" you mean something else than survival, I would really want to know what are they.

But that "Just" kinda implies that it's not the property of the language, but a testimony to the plasticity of your brain. :-) BTW when I write Python, not only I don't need Google, in most cases I don't need Python either. ;-D <blockquote> If you are serious, it would be awesome. </blockquote> I'm serious that our project could probably soon need one more programmer. So any other sums and your ability to recommend or deny somebody is another one trolling attempt. No problem, I can discuss anything when the time will coming but such things you sounded is a big disadvantage among other disadvantages and advantages. You are unsure that I'm not right person? It's my disadvantage in this situation (among other disadvantages and advantages). All these things are disscussable. <hr /> I can't understand Python users who blaming PHP architecture, but their revenue with Python work is "about a third of that amount for pay". Language architecture is not the only thing which matters. Money you can gain is not the only thing which matters, too. It is a complex question. When somebody starts holy war which is based only on one aspect of language is not so good idea. When somebody starts thinking about others who use other language as of about people who living in jungles (and this thinking is based on only one aspect of the language), it's awful. Again, programming language is a tool. Not a matter of life. As for me, PHP helps me make more money with spending less time. So when I have a good amount of money to survive, I just can stop programming and dedicate my time to my surrounding people. For example, when I have enough money for buying new car for my grandma, it's awesome. Why I must spend my time while discussing PHP architecture problems? It doesn't matters for me. I can spend this time in a lot more productive ways out of Internet at all. I was expecting a war after this publication. At least a battle. I have it in comments from veky. :) And since I consider myself like a genius person, I think I have used correct words in the solution title. :) I just has noticed how veky treats mentions of PHP when he is around, so I have mentioned it and send him a link to this solution. I think, comments for this publication are part of the solution. :) It's a joke, of course. I just was searching great samples of obfuscated code in order to port it into Python. I've found that the Star Wars JAPH is a great candidate for this, so I've written a Python version. It has lost a lot of its charm (Yoda, for example) after porting, but it is still be, at least, an interesting one piece of code, I think.
