if you use [.find], you can simplify like below, since [.find] return -1 if there is no letter in the text. def goes_after(word: str, first: str, second: str) -> bool: return 0< word.find(first) +1 == word.find(second)

Thanks for the solution. Try/except was new to me and feels more appropriate than if/else.

Good use of exceptions rather than using find and checking for not found :) It is best practices to catch explicit exceptions, so in the case ... except ValueError:
