Ha, ha - no, sir! I teach middle school gifted students (ages 12-14)! They like to make games using Scratch (scratch.mit.edu), but shy away when I steer them toward Python content at Codecademy, Coursera, and inventwithpython.com. I have tinkered on and off with Python over the last year with no real plan or purpose. I suppose I hope that one day I can be proficient enough to help students make some game using Pygame or make a 'useful' program. Simple games in Scratch is the extent of my programming 'expertise'! For now, I guess that learning Python is a hobbby...!

Ah, ok then. I thought you teach C because you have that low-level mindset: int flags, while loops, indexing sequences... but yes, Scratch uses that a lot, too. Well, after a year or two at CiO, I guess you'll be able to teach Python the right way. :-] And I have a few words for your students: programming is a tool. Saying it's boring kinda misses the point: it's like saying that "using Microsoft Word" (or OpenOffice Writer, or whatever) is boring. I mean, it is. :-D But the whole job of a (modern) word processor is to fade back and just let you write what you want. What you produce eventually, is boring or not boring. Not the tools you use. The whole point of a (modern) programming language is to fade back and just let you express your intentions, what do you want to do. And Python does that extremely well. Your intentions are what makes it boring or not.

I totally agree with you that Python, among others, is just a tool and isn't inherently boring or exciting. It's all about what you do with it, and there's a lot of potential there. Just try to convince a 12 year old boy that he wants to spend 90 minutes converting a string of digits to an integer so you can find the product of the non-zero values. He'd rather go to the dentist. I find joy in seeing "Task Solved" splash across the screen, even if it takes me hours to get there and involves using '" ".join on a str. and then .split() right after that!' I don't care how long it takes or how many pages I read on Stack Overflow! I try to expose my students to new concepts that they won't typically see in school. We read short stories and novels, do some recreational math, and also experiment with Kodu and Alice. Some of them get into programming and want to pursue it (and video game design) as a career. I definitely want to be more proficient in Python so I can help students solve Digits Multiplication in ten minutes instead of ninty! I guess I've made some progress with students since it's 7:30 a.m. on a Saturday and my 12-year-old son is in his room, creating Scratch programs, and his 13-year-old classmate took my Raspberry Pi home for the weekend!

CiO is not for 12yo kids. But neither is Word. :-P On the other hand, if you have a bike lock and a hairpin, and you can insert and rotate a hairpin if every fang in the hairpin is lower than the corresponding valley in the lock mechanism, and you want to know in how many ways you can do it, maybe they'll be interested. And it is the same problem as above (I'm sure you see how:). (The main idea: try to motivate them for the problem, not for the solution. We old farts think we're cool with our mathematical abstractions. Kids are much better at parsing stories.)
