the "sum(array[-1:])" is unnecesary, can replace it with array[-1] or tiny more slow array.pop(), but it's cool puzzle

If I'm not mistaken, using array[-1] necessitates the use of an if statement in the case that array = [].

How does this work for an empty array? Shouldn't it give "out of range" error for "array[-1:]"?

No, this returns empty string in Python: <pre class='brush: python'>>>> ""[-1:] '' </pre>

Yeah I tested and it works. I see the point though, it is not a direct index, but a range, since there are no elements in that range it returns and empty set. Makes sense now thanks :)
