It's as clear as can be: it receives w, and checks whether any pair of elements of w returns True when fed into str.endswith method. It says so in the code. How could it be clearer? (Ok, it could have longer variable names.:)

Excellent! Starmap is a something new for me :) But I used permutations too.

starmap is like map, only difference is that its first argument receives elements of the second one as a starred argument, not as a whole. <pre class='brush: python'>tuple(itertools.starmap(int.__add__, ((3, 5), (2, 7), (6, 9)))) ~~> (8, 9, 15) </pre> because int.__add__(3, 5) is 8. Note that it receives not (3, 5), but *(3, 5) as an argument (that is, 3 and 5 as separate arguments).

is this efficient way of doing that? wouldn't starmap first run str.endswith for ALL permutations before any checks for Trues?

No, it wouldn't. That's one of big changes from Python2. In Python3, all of those "processing" functions (like starmap, but also map, filter, enumerate,...) are kinda iterators, and they provide elements only as needed. Also, any knows how to short-circuit when it comes to something true, but you probably already know that part. See: <pre class='brush: python'>def analyze(i, x): print(i) return x >>> any(starmap(analyze, enumerate((0,0,1,0,0)))) 0 1 2 True </pre>

... or I learned something from you. I wonder why people always seem to think this is a one-way process. :-] Anyway, of course yours is clearer WRT names. The title - straightforward - is meant to say that I don't really think the algorithm is smart at all, it's just an almost direct translation from natural language to Python. Where your code could be clearer is a thing I say so often here that you've probably heard it already: mapping lambdas. Please don't map lambdas. Whenever you map a lambda, a python dies. :-P Mapping lambdas is a LISPism, equally bad as Cisms like looping over indices instead of things themselves (though seen less often, of course, for obvious reasons). Pythonic way is a comprehension, or more directly, a generator expression. Just replace <pre class='brush: python'>map(lambda spam: sausage, eggs) ~~~> (sausage for spam in eggs) </pre> (if it's already in parentheses, you don't need to write an extra pair). Also, there is a more practical reason to use genexp instead of maplambda (besides ideology): genexp can use unpacking, maplambda in Python 3 cannot (PEP 3113), so you must use fixed indices to extract your arguments. Whenever you use fixed indices on tuples, you should probably use unpacking (or namedtuples, but here they are obviously overkill). <pre class='brush: python'>return any(one.endswith(other) for one, other in permutations(words, 2)) </pre>

I think you're missing the point and misrepresenting Dahlia's code. It's not really "`map(lambda...)`". It's `map(is_suffix, ...)`. Apparently it's important to Dahlia for clarity to give the function/expression a name. So the real reason a python might die is the use of `lambda` instead of `def`. And you know who's the biggest advocate for doing that and possibly responsible for Dahlia doing that? :-P

Ah. No, I don't think you'll get away so easily. :-P You know that I didn't say it's really `map(lambda...)`. I said that she was mapping a lambda. And she did map a lambda. The fact that she referred to that lambda by a name doesn't change the fact that it is a LISPism. In numerous occasions, I have tried to precisely explain why I use lambdas in the way I use them here on CiO [mostly because it has puzzled even myself why I have almost no need to use them in that way when writing professional code]. <a href="https://py.checkio.org/mission/binary-count/publications/veky/python-3/hinted/share/7bcd07614f4c5183a12b675c05cceb5d/#comment-42974">One of that comments</a> is so close to @DahliaSR's one that it's practically impossible to claim she didn't see it. I'll go on a limb here, and say that the only reason she named that lambda is that otherwise she would "have"* to wrap a line in an awkward place otherwise, so she chose the lesser evil. It was a good choice between those two options, but my whole point was that there is a third option, superior to both. [* so that a hobgoblin not die. Please distinguish pythons from hobgoblins. ;-P] Why would you want to rename a builtin function just to star-apply it? Maybe in some cases it is defensible (though I can't think of any), but in this case it surely isn't. `issuffix(('abc', 'bc'))`, seriously? As in, "`('abc', 'bc')` is a suffix" (of what?:-P)? If the alternative was some horrible indexing such as `'abc'[-len('bc'):] == 'bc'`, I'd even agree, but since we have _already had that discussion and decided that TOOWTDI should be called str.endswith, it's really weird to need to rename it. Let's be honest. It wasn't for clarity. It was so she could map it.
