date1 is like (2014, 9, 11), and datetime() also accepts three arguments such as datetime(2014, 9, 11). If I just use datetime(date1) then it become datetime((2014, 9, 11)), noticing it contains double parenthesis, which will raise error. So using datetime(*date1) will let the members in tuple (or list) date1 come out to directly become arguments in datetime(), namely datetime(2014, 9, 11).

The "*" takes a sequance (list, tuple, set) and returns it in a form of positional arguments. Extremely useful for passing parameters to functions/methods.

Interesting. What about zip(*matrix)? Is that asterisk doing the same thing in the zip function?

Yes. It takes all the elements in matrix and applies them as separate parameters to function zip (and works the same way with any function/method).

We can also set keyword arguments by using "**" and dictionary: <pre class='brush: python'>func(**dictionary) </pre> for example: <pre class='brush: python'>import datetime dict1 = {"year":1999, "month":12, "day":1} d1 = datetime.date(**dict1) # same as: d1 = datetime.date(year=1999, month=12, day=1) </pre>

Don't know the relationship on * in Python and C. I just treat it as a expression to take contents in a tuple. :)

Thank you for the explanation. Without this knowledge, I had to put in date1[0],date1[1],date1[2]. Using of *date1 is more elegant.

Nice, pretty much what I did. I ended up using from datetime import date and then abs((date(date1) - date(date2)).days) Just a smidgen shorter but doesn't really seem to make a difference.

No, it woudnt datetime - this is python's module, that have 3 components: date, time and datetime you can import the whole module or choose what exactly you need
