Very short and nice solution but why you don't use also oneliner in if statement?

Because of the difference between display += i and display = i. Or because I don't know how to write them.

You can try do this similar way like in last line of you code: display = display + i if display != "0" else i :)

Interesting solution in contrast to a boring state machine. But this solution can't help for further calculator tasks. And it cheats the tests. calculator("+12-2=2="), for example. Your solution returns wrong -10

Even though this answer is wrong, the test case passes. I leave it as a lesson to myself.
