Lambda is a good solution but why assign lambda to a variable? Lambdas are designed to be used on the fly hence no need for assignement.

To pass the tests. <pre class='brush: python'>backward_string("string") </pre> would be called in the tests to see if the solution is correct.

I had some problems in the IDLE REPL hammering the ☝️solution in a Python function. I was finally successful after incorporating assignment as <a href="https://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-0572/#examples">PEP 572</a> demonstrated for me. <pre class='brush: python'>>>> def backward_string(text): return (text:= text[::-1]) >>> backward_string("foobar333") '333raboof' </pre>

For the sake of clarity, it's that I don't fully grok what to do with a lambda in the boilerplate `def x(y): # your code here` at CheckIO. Which is why I'm here 🔑

Let's create a function in the standard way <pre class='brush: python'>>>> def backward_string(text): ... return text[::-1] >>> </pre> Let's check its type <pre class='brush: python'>>>> type(backward_string) <class 'function'> </pre> I used lambda to create backward_string function for one line only <pre class='brush: python'>>>> backward_string = lambda val: val[::-1] </pre> Let's check its type too <pre class='brush: python'>>>> type(backward_string) <class 'function'> </pre> Now we can call it as a standard function. <pre class='brush: python'>>>> backward_string("foobar333") '333raboof' </pre>

I don't understand the [::-1] - can someone help me understand? I understand that -1 means the last item, I understand that you're referencing the element in the square brackets -- but I'm having a hard time understanding <ul> <li>what :: means (I'm used to just [i:j] with a single colon)</li> <li>putting the pieces of all of this together.</li> </ul> I'm new to this and would appreciate help, as I came up empty when I googled. what ::
